Advent Wreath for Longest Night

Lighting the Advent Wreath (responsive)

We look around us and feel so sad, worthless, and discouraged.
And you remain with us. [light first candle]

We look around and see unspeakable violence, terrorism and hatred.
And you see who humanity can become. [light second candle]

We look around and find ourselves sliding into anger and hatred.
And you remind us who we are. [light third candle]

We feel sorry for ourselves. We think something is wrong with us.
And you see the good within. [light fourth candle]

We look around us and see death and destruction.
But you see hope. [light Christ candle]

Hymn Star-Child #174 SPP, screen

We look around and see greed, power seeking, and fear having its day. We are ready to give up on our human kindred.
But you never give up. You promise that despite these tough times you never give up on humanity.

Longest Night (Blue Christmas) Liturgy

Prelude Balm in Gilead, instrumental

Prayer of Invocation

Holy One, Why must this time of year feel so melancholy? Why when everyone else is joyous, do we miss those we’ve lost or those who are far away? Why is the world so broken, so fragmented? Why is there so much evil in the world? Why do we feel so alone? Move about the room. Spend time with each of our hurts. We are grateful you are not one to tell us to “buck up” or “move on.” We know you love us, even when we feel so lethargic and morose. Be present with us in the quiet. Be our  God. Be our hope in the darkness.
Amen.

Sacred Words  Ezekiel 37:1-14

The Lord’s power overcame me, and while I was in the Lord’s spirit, he led me out and set me down in the middle of a certain valley. It was full of bones. 2 He led me through them all around, and I saw that there were a great many of them on the valley floor, and they were very dry.

3 He asked me, “Human one, can these bones live again?”

I said, “Lord God, only you know.”

4 He said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, Dry bones, hear the Lord’s word! 5 The Lord God proclaims to these bones: I am about to put breath in you, and you will live again. 6 I will put sinews on you, place flesh on you, and cover you with skin. When I put breath in you, and you come to life, you will know that I am the Lord.”

7 I prophesied just as I was commanded. There was a great noise as I was prophesying, then a great quaking, and the bones came together, bone by bone. 8 When I looked, suddenly there were sinews on them. The flesh appeared, and then they were covered over with skin. But there was still no breath in them.

9 He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, human one! Say to the breath, The Lord God proclaims: Come from the four winds, breath! Breathe into these dead bodies and let them live.”

10 I prophesied just as he commanded me. When the breath entered them, they came to life and stood on their feet, an extraordinarily large company.

11 He said to me, “Human one, these bones are the entire house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished. We are completely finished.’ 12 So now, prophesy and say to them, The Lord God proclaims: I’m opening your graves! I will raise you up from your graves, my people, and I will bring you to Israel’s fertile land. 13 You will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and raise you up from your graves, my people. 14 I will put my breath[a] in you, and you will live. I will plant you on your fertile land, and you will know that I am the Lord. I’ve spoken, and I will do it. This is what the Lord says.”   2011 © Common English Bible

Our Father who art heaven,

Thy kingdom come,
  thy will be done,
on earth as it is in  heaven.

Give us this day our daily

And forgive us our debts,

And lead us not into

        but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom & the

Loving Faithfulness

Lighting the Advent Wreath/Call to Worship

Young and unmarried she would became pregnant. Fear would be normal.
Mary chose loving faithfulness.

Old and married she had not become pregnant. Despair would have been normal.
Elizabeth chose loving faithfulness.

Both younger and  older kinswomen became pregnant.
God chose faithfulness to the women.

Younger went to visit older. She called out a greeting upon arrival.
Elizabeth’s infant leapt in her womb!

The unborn babe was unable to contain his joy at the presence of the woman who would be loving mother to Jesus.
God’s faithful love becomes incarnate on Christmas night.

Let us worship the God who never gives up on humanity. Let us worship the One whose love always wins!
Let us worship in love & joy today.

Invocation – In This Very Room

Prayer of Invocation

Holy One, make your presence known in this room. Move about the pews, between each of us, pausing in the heart of each of us. Remind us that all of us here and beyond are your beloved, created in your image. We are your people, holding your essence within us. Help us to connect with you and with one another during this time of worship. Amen.

In the midst of struggles

Offering Invitation

In the midst of struggles, God is present. In times of grief and times of weariness  and tragedy God weeps with us. When we fail to be the people we know we should, when we sin, God’s grace envelops us. God beckons us to live within God’s unfolding realm of love.

As the offering plate comes around respond in openness to all we’ve been given. Place your financial offering in the plate but also — and more importantly — place your hand over it and silently commit to God to use your gifts, talents, and heart for furthering the unfolding realm of God on earth.

Joy in the Midst of Incomplete Hope

*Call to Worship/Lighting of Wreath

Speaking as hope, though incomplete, began to feel tangible…
the prophet speaks.

Speaking into the time when the people were no longer exiled…
but the struggles were still real.

Isaiah outlines God’s vision for God’s people…
a vision of joy for ALL of God’s people.

God will bring Good News for the poor, God will bind up the wounds of the brokenhearted…
the imprisoned will be released.

In this time of Jubilee, grace and forgiveness will abound…
the foreigner and stranger will live among us.

Let us rejoice! Let us worship!
The God of all peoples envisions a time when  we will all live within God’s realm on earth as it is in heaven.

Praise be!
Praise be!

“Return!”

*Call to Worship/Lighting of Wreath (Peace)

Long ago, when the people had turned to idols and demagogues for answers…
God sent a prophet. “Return!” calls the Lord.

When evil and sin ruled the day, when the people had forgotten God’s covenant of love and justice…
God’s prophet spoke. “Return!” calls the Lord.

Despite unforgivable sins…
Grace awaits the contrite heart.“Return!” calls the Lord.

Like so many years ago, we are promised safe passage home to the center of being…
“Return!” calls the Lord. And we begin our journey back.

*Hymn Star-Child #174 SPP, screen

In a time when our world is fragmented and filled with too much hate…
We light this second candle of Advent, a symbol of the peace that comes with our return to God.

Hopeful Commitment

An Offering Invitation:

Beginning our story of faith anew, we look toward love incarnate. The human Jesus will feel all the same feelings that we feel, that is, of course what incarnation means.

The baby Jesus, felt hunger crying out to be held at Mary’s breast. The adult Jesus, like us, must’ve felt despair at times. He must’ve felt joy and fear and anxiety. Jesus also felt hope. He trusted in the one true God who always keeps promises.

As the offering plate comes around place your financial offering in the plate but also — and more importantly — place your hand over it and silently commit to God to use your gifts, talents, and heart of hope for furthering the unfolding realm of God on earth.

Worshiping in Hope

*Call to Worship/Litany for Lighting the Advent Candle of Hope

In a time when hope was veiled beneath laws prohibiting prayer…
Daniel worshiped the God of extravagant love.

In a time when the price of hope was to be thrown into a pit of hungry lions…
Daniel worshiped the God of abundant grace.

Call to Worship optional ending:

In a time when our world is fragmented and filled with too much hate.
We gather to worship in hope.

Lighting of Advent Candle optional ending:

In a time when our world is fragmented and filled with too much hate…
We light this first candle of Advent, a symbol of trust and hope.

Re-membering in Discordant Times

May we re-member in this discordant time that we are all One. Move us to act as One, humbly and resolutely calling out injustice. Give us the courage and passion to build a world in which all share in power and abundance. We must not be afraid, you tell us: that we may believe you. As you created us to be, Amen.
